Leg Exercises To Keep Walking In Fitness

It is undeniable that our legs play a very important role in our lives as we use them to carry our bodies around. The legs have many muscles that co-ordinate effectively with the core muscles to support the normally huge torso if its proportion with the lower body is anything to go by. The legs muscles also co-ordinate among themselves to allow movements in all directions. Realizing how invaluable these useful assets are, we will definitely never want to compromise their health and will therefore take all the leg exercises that will keep them serving us for as long as they can.

To understand your leg exercises needs, you will probably need to appreciate the various leg muscles that tirelessly and in very sophisticated manner co-ordinate to allow any possible legs movements. Right at the front of your thighs are the quadriceps or simply the quads. These are large muscles and play a big role. They are put in action mostly when we move our legs forward. At the back of our thighs we have the complementing muscles known as hamstrings. These allow the movements associated with lifting our heels or moving the legs towards the back. They contract and stretch in proportion with the quads to allow any possible leg movements. When moving the legs forward, the quads contract while at the same time the hamstrings stretch out to lengthen. With the back movement of the legs, the opposite is true. The glutes consisting of the gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus and the gluteus midius are a group of muscles that extend the hips and are in action when we move our legs away from the body to the sides. Hip flexors are other muscles that support the lifting of the knees.

Since all the leg muscles work together to allow movements and support the upper body, leg exercises that strengthen and keep the legs supple are important. Weak leg muscles not only affect the legs themselves but also other body parts like the lower back. If our legs cannot support weight lifting, they pass the work to the core muscles which include the deep lower back muscles. Common conditions on the legs due to lack of enough exercises and poor form mostly occur at the joints of the knees. Another common cause is due to overuse of the legs muscles highlighting the importance of flexibility exercises. Stretching your legs on daily basis is thus a very healthy habit that will keep your precious assets fit.
